Running in Barcelona: Beaches, Collserola and a Free Saturday 5K
There are few better ways to learn a new city than on foot, at running pace. Barcelona hands you a rare mix: a flat Mediterranean seafront, a proper mountain ridge a train ride from the centre, and a running calendar that runs all year. If you have just arrived and want to get into running here, or pick it back up, this is where to start.
The seafront: your easiest first run
The Passeig Marítim gives you more than 6 kilometres of continuous, flat, traffic-free running along the sea, from Barceloneta out past the Port Olímpic beaches toward Poblenou and beyond. It is well lit, busy in a friendly way, and dotted with water fountains and outdoor gym stops. You can stay on the promenade or drop onto the sand at Barceloneta for a tougher session. For a newcomer with no sense of the city yet, this is the route that is almost impossible to get lost on.
The Carretera de les Aigües: the local favourite
Ask Barcelona runners for their favourite spot and most will name the Carretera de les Aigües, a flat dirt track that runs along the slope of the Collserola hills below Tibidabo, with the whole city and the sea spread out beneath you. It stretches for around 9 to 10 kilometres of packed earth, with almost no cars, kilometre markers and water fountains along the way. To reach it, take the FGC train (S1 or S2 from Plaça Catalunya) to Peu del Funicular, then the Vallvidrera funicular up: the trail is a few minutes' walk from the top. It is soft underfoot, kind to your knees, and glorious at sunrise.
Montjuïc: hills and history
When you want to build some strength, head to Montjuïc. A roughly 7-kilometre loop climbs from Plaça d'Espanya up over 180 metres of the hill, past the Magic Fountain, the Olympic Stadium and the castle, with viewpoints over the port at the top. It is hillier and quieter than the beach, with gardens and shade, and it rewards the effort with some of the best views in the city.
Running through the seasons
Barcelona summers are hot and humid, so from June to September most people run early morning or after sunset, and stick to the shaded Collserola tracks or the breezy seafront. Spring and autumn are the sweet spot: mild, bright, and made for long weekend runs. Even winter is generous here, with plenty of clear days in the low teens, which is why the racing season peaks in the colder months.
Races worth putting in your calendar
Signing up for a race is a great way to give your training a shape and meet other runners. A few local institutions:
- Cursa dels Nassos, a fast, flat New Year's Eve 10K through Poblenou.
- Cursa de Bombers, the firefighters' 10K each April, one of the city's most popular.
- Cursa de la Mercè, run during the September city festival.
- Zurich Barcelona Marathon in March, a 20,000-strong urban course past the Sagrada Família and the beach.
For a low-pressure start, there is a free, timed parkrun 5K every Saturday morning on the seafront, open to everyone from walkers to fast club runners and always welcoming to newcomers. You can find the details on the parkrun website.
Finding people to run with
Running solo along the sea is lovely, but it gets a lot better with company, and for anyone new to Barcelona it is one of the simplest ways to make friends. Running with others also makes those early-morning summer sessions actually happen. The city has an active English-speaking running scene, and pace no longer matters much once you are in a group that waits at the top of the hill for everyone.
That is a big part of what we do at Keep Calm. We are a free, volunteer-run community for English speakers and internationals in Barcelona, and we bring people together around sport and the outdoors without anyone needing to be fast or experienced. If you would like to run with others, come and say hello and join our WhatsApp community to see when the next session or social is on. Lace up, and we will see you out there.
