Badminton in Barcelona
Fast-paced badminton for English speakers in Barcelona
About Badminton with Keep Calm Community
Badminton is fast, fun, and social, and it is one of the easiest ways to meet people when you are new to Barcelona. Keep Calm Community brings together English-speaking expats, internationals, and locals for friendly games where everyone is welcome, whatever your level.
It is a sport that rewards showing up more than it rewards experience. Rallies are quick, a session can flex from a light warm-up hit to a properly competitive game, and because doubles is so common, you are playing with and against other people from your very first point, not standing on the sidelines waiting your turn. That makes it a natural icebreaker for anyone building a new social circle in the city.
Whether you grew up playing or you are picking up a racket for the first time, you will find a relaxed and welcoming group here. Barcelona has a decent scattering of indoor sports centres and courts across the city where badminton is played, so once sessions are up and running there should be options in more than one neighbourhood. Sessions are organised through WhatsApp, so you can join whenever it suits you and start rallying with new friends.
This group is brand new and currently marked as coming soon, we do not have a confirmed schedule, court, or cost to share yet. Joining the WhatsApp group now is the best way to be one of the first to know once sessions are locked in, and honestly, early members tend to have the biggest say in when and where it ends up running.

Badminton FAQ
About the Session
What is Keep Calm Badminton?
A weekly badminton session organised through the Keep Calm community - a not-for-profit community for English speakers in Barcelona. We play every Friday evening, currently at Vall d'Hebron, organised directly by Mel: sign up via a Google Form, courts booked based on who's signed up, and payment by Bizum or cash on the day depending on how long you've been playing with us.
Is there another regular session besides Friday?
Yes - a Tuesday evening session, 18:00-20:00, also organised directly by Mel. See Tuesday Badminton for details. From 8 September (Tuesday) and 18 September (Friday), Friday and Tuesday split by level (see below) rather than being two copies of the same format - pick whichever matches you. We previously ran a Sunday morning session too, but that ended when the venue cancelled our bookings in August 2026; nothing's confirmed to replace it yet.
Are there other sessions in the works?
Nothing beyond Friday and Tuesday is confirmed. Keep an eye on the WhatsApp group for updates.
Who is this for?
Everyone. It's a mixed game - ladies and gents both welcome, all ages. From 8 September (Tuesday) and 18 September (Friday), Friday is pitched at Improver/lower Intermediate and Tuesday at Beginner/Improver, as both sessions start sharing court time with BCN Badminton. Until then, both sessions are open to all levels. This is social badminton, not a competition, so turning up and having fun matters far more than the score.
Is it beginner friendly?
From 18 September, the Friday session becomes aimed at Improver/lower Intermediate players - if you're newer or less confident, Tuesday (Beginner/Improver from 8 September) is the better fit. Before those dates, Friday is still open to all levels. Be honest about your level when you sign up so the games stay enjoyable for everyone. If you're brand new and unsure which to pick, mention it in the group.
Who organises the Friday session?
Mel organises it directly for Keep Calm - she opens a Google Form to gauge interest, books courts based on who's signed up, and collects payment (Bizum for new players, cash on the day for regulars) once the roster's confirmed. (Earlier, in June 2026, Friday sessions ran through a partnership with BCN Badminton's Meetup group; that partnership ended, and sessions were organised directly with no external partner for a while. From 18 September 2026, Friday and Tuesday sessions share court time with BCN Badminton again, this time as a level split rather than a joint Meetup RSVP - see above. Sessions are also cross-listed as events on Keep Calm's own Meetup page since 21 July, but that's just for visibility - payment and confirmation still happen entirely through Mel, Bizum, and the WhatsApp group.)
The Weekly Session
When and where do you play?
Friday evenings, normally at La Mar Bella Municipal Sports Complex, Av. del Litoral, 86-96, Poblenou - exact time confirmed weekly when courts are booked. The session ran 16:00-18:30 through June, then 18:00-20:00 through July and most of August; 17:00-19:00 from 11 August 2026 (a double-booking meant the courts had to move an hour earlier). See Venue for full details and how to get there, including the temporary Vall d'Hebron venue while La Mar Bella is closed for August.
What format do you play?
Doubles practice games (2v2), rotating so everyone gets plenty of court time and games with different partners. The number of courts depends on how many people sign up that week - 1-3 at La Mar Bella, capped at 2 (max 12 players signed up on our form) at Vall d'Hebron, though the practical Keep Calm spot count is up to 6 now that we share the session with BCN Badminton (see above).
How much does it cost and how do I pay?
Cost varies by venue and how many courts get booked - €5.50 per person at La Mar Bella, €7 per person at Vall d'Hebron - covering the court hire and shuttlecocks. If you're new, Mel shares the exact amount and a Bizum number (Revolut on request) once the roster's confirmed - pay in advance, your spot is only secured once you've paid. If you've played with us 3 or more times before, you can pay cash on the day instead.
When paying by Bizum, use the reference Badminton DD/MM Firstname L (the session date plus your name as it appears on that week's card) - e.g. Badminton 14/08 Chris T - so whoever's collecting can match it to the right session and player.
How many spots are there?
It depends on how many courts Mel books that week, based on how many people sign up via the form - there's no fixed cap like a venue-run booking system would have.
Joining a Session
How do I join?
- Join the Keep Calm Badminton WhatsApp group
- Sign up via the Google Form at keepcalm.fit/friday-badminton - it's posted about a week before each session and stays open until 4 days before (or until full), first come first served, though Mel has final say on the roster
- Once the roster's confirmed, pay Mel by Bizum (or Revolut) if you're new, or bring cash on the day if you've played with us 3+ times before
- Bring your racket, indoor court shoes, water, and turn up for the confirmed time
What if I want to come but the form's already closed?
Just message the group - Mel books based on who's signed up, so let her know as early as you can in case there's still room to add another court.
What if I can't make it after paying?
Let Mel know as soon as possible so she can offer your spot to someone else - don't leave it until the last minute.
On the Day
What should I bring?
- Your own racket (ask in the group if you need to borrow one)
- Indoor court shoes with non-marking soles
- Water to stay hydrated
- A towel and padlock if you plan to shower after
- Payment: Bizum (or Revolut) if you're new and haven't already paid, or cash if you're a regular paying on the day
Do I need my own racket?
Bring your own if you have one. If you need to borrow one, ask in the group beforehand - members sometimes have a spare. Some venues (currently Vall d'Hebron) also rent rackets at reception for a couple of euros - a handy backup if you turn up without one - see Other Venues & Gear. If you play with feather shuttles, bring your own tube occasionally, or mention it in the group in advance.
Are there showers?
Venues have changing rooms and showers, so bring a towel and a padlock if you want to use them.
Is there anything after the session?
Post-session food or drinks are informal and everyone's welcome, whether you played that day or not. If you're joining, a heads-up in the group beforehand helps with numbers.
What if I need to cancel?
Late cancellations - within 24 hours of the session - aren't reimbursed unless a replacement player is found to take your spot. This is stated in the WhatsApp group description, so check it before you commit to paying.
What time should I arrive?
Aim to arrive a few minutes before the confirmed start time (shared in the group that week) so you're warmed up and ready when court time starts.
Where exactly are the courts?
Court numbers vary week to week depending on what Mel books - check the group for that week's exact courts and directions. See Venue.
Safety and Etiquette
Is it safe? Who's responsible?
Participation is voluntary and at your own risk. The host facilitates the session but is not responsible for participants' wellbeing or for any lost or damaged belongings. Warm up before playing, stretch afterwards, and keep your valuables with you.
What's expected of me on court?
Rotate so everyone gets a game, keep the banter friendly and inclusive, welcome newcomers, and help set up and pack down the nets and equipment. Respect the venue staff and other users of the sports hall.
Weather
What happens if it rains?
Nothing - it's indoor, so the session runs rain or shine.
