Padel in Barcelona
Barcelona's most popular racket sport, now in English
About Padel with Keep Calm Community
Padel is the fastest-growing sport in Spain, and Keep Calm Community runs one of the most active English-speaking padel groups in Barcelona - a free, volunteer-run space for expats, internationals, and locals to play together, no Spanish and no partner required. Whether you've never held a racket or you're already smashing winners, there are sessions for every level, from complete beginners (0.5) to advanced players (2+).
Our organizers Dan and Nadir coordinate weekly matches across multiple venues including Padel Delfos, Up Pádel & Tennis Cornellà, and Aurial Pàdel Cornellà. Games are organized through a simple poll system: polls open on Saturday, close on Tuesday, and mid-week games are arranged based on responses - so you don't need to already know three other players to get a game.
It's not just about the sport. After every Sunday session, the group heads to Caña + Tapa for post-game drinks from 19:00. It's the easiest way to meet English-speaking expats and internationals in Barcelona while staying active, whether you're brand new to the city or have been here for years.

What should I wear?
- Shoes: Sports shoes (tennis/padel court shoes preferred)
- Clothing: Comfortable athletic wear that allows free movement
- Weather: Most courts are outdoor - check weather and dress accordingly
Do I need my own balls?
- Best to bring your own but other players might have some
- Worst case scenario check with the organiser
Is padel suitable for all fitness levels?
- Yes! Padel is less physically demanding than tennis
- Lower impact on joints due to shorter court and underarm serving
- A wide range of fitness levels can enjoy it (note: Keep Calm sessions are for adults 18+)
What's the difference between padel and tennis?
- Court: Smaller, enclosed with walls you can play off
- Racket: Solid (no strings), with holes
- Serving: Underarm only, must bounce first
- Scoring: Same as tennis but different tactics due to walls
How long does a typical game last?
- Casual games: 1-1.5 hours
- Competitive matches: Can be 2-3 hours
- Beginners: Often shorter as you're learning
What happens if it rains?
- Check if courts are covered/indoor
- Most venues have cancellation policies
- Playtomic app usually handles weather-related cancellations
Can I bring spectators?
- Most venues allow spectators
- Check with individual venue policies
- Some may charge a small fee for non-players
How do I improve my game?
- Practice regularly: Consistency is key
- Take lessons: Many venues offer coaching
- Watch others: Learn from better players
- Join tournaments: Great for motivation and improvement
Can I switch with another player/person?
Yes! If you need to swap your spot or change courts:
- Find someone to switch with - post in the WhatsApp group
- Notify your court booker - let them know about the change
- Update the organizers - message the organisers
- Be considerate - don't make frequent last-minute changes
What happens if it is scheduled to rain?
We have a detailed rain policy:
- Games are ON unless officially cancelled - don't assume cancellation
- Venue cancels = full refund through Playtomic
- All 4 players agree to cancel = contact the organisers to cancel officially
- You choose not to play = counts as normal dropout (see Event Rules)
- See: Sunday Padel Rain.md for complete policy
- Remember: This is a social group - if courts close, grab drinks at the bar!
Is padel similar to tennis if I have played that?
Yes, but with key differences:
- Similarities: Same scoring, rallying concept, court game
- Differences:
- Smaller court with walls you can play off
- Solid racket (not strings) with holes
- Underarm serving only
- More about angles and tactics due to walls
- Good news: Tennis skills transfer well - you'll likely start as Improver level!
What racket should I buy as a beginner?
For absolute beginners:
- Try rental first (€4 per session) to see if you enjoy padel
- After 5-10 games, consider buying if you're hooked
Budget-friendly options:
- Decathlon: €40-80 range for beginner rackets
- Good quality for starting out
- Easy to replace if you progress quickly
- Look for: Round-shaped rackets (more control, easier for beginners)
- Avoid: Expensive pro rackets - unnecessary until you're advanced
Ask the community: Many members can recommend specific models in the WhatsApp group!
