Welcome to Keep Calm Languages! To keep our exchanges friendly and welcoming for everyone, please follow these guidelines.
These rules add to - but don't replace - our community-wide policies. Please read these first if you haven't already:
- WhatsApp Rules - group communication, unsolicited DMs, referral links, spam
- Community Conduct - respect, harassment, advertising, conflict resolution
- Event Rules - commitment, cancellations, the strike system
- Safety & Liability - participation at your own risk, the 18+ age requirement
You must be 18 or over to take part. Keep Calm is an adults-only community.
1. Everyone Is Learning
- Be patient and encouraging with every level, especially complete beginners
- Nobody is here to be judged, corrected harshly, or made to feel slow
- Give people time to find their words
2. Share the Time
- A language exchange goes both ways - make sure both languages get a fair share
- Don't dominate the conversation in the language you already speak
- Help others get their turn, and include quieter people in the group
3. Keep It Inclusive
- Welcome newcomers and bring them into a group
- Don't form closed cliques that are hard to join
- Switch partners through the evening so everyone gets to practise with different people
4. Correct Kindly
- Offer the right word or phrase gently and only when it helps
- This is a relaxed exchange, not a lesson - don't turn it into one unless someone asks
5. This Is Not a Dating Group
- Come to practise languages and make friends
- Unwanted advances or using the group to hit on people are not on
- Read the Community Conduct policy
6. Look After Yourself and Others
- We usually meet in bars and cafes - drink responsibly
- Pay for your own food and drinks
- Be respectful of the venue and its staff
7. Be Sound
- Turn up with a good attitude and an open mind
- Celebrate the wins, laugh at the mistakes, and help each other improve
