A short note for anyone who's noticed a niche within a Keep Calm group (a specific dive spot, a particular route, a specific format) take off, and is thinking about spinning up a dedicated WhatsApp group for it.
The problem
Keep Calm groups exist so people can find an activity and join in. When a niche inside a bigger group gets popular enough that someone creates a separate, private WhatsApp group for it, something quietly breaks: all the actual organising, the "who's in, when, where," moves into that private group, and the original Keep Calm group goes quiet.
New members who join later see nothing happening there. It looks like Keep Calm isn't active, when really it's just happening somewhere they can't see and were never invited to. Over time, this hollows out the group and cuts off the exact thing Keep Calm is for: new people discovering an activity and joining in.
The simple rule
Organise the plan in the open. Take the logistics private.
- What, where, and when (the actual plan - "diving at X on Saturday, meeting at Y at 9am") goes in the relevant Keep Calm group first, so everyone in it can see it and join.
- Everything else (car sharing, who's bringing what gear, the back-and-forth that isn't useful to anyone not going) can move to a private group once people have signed up.
This isn't about stopping people from making plans together or becoming closer friends within the community, that's a good thing and exactly what Keep Calm is for. It's just about keeping the first step, discovering that something is happening, visible to everyone in the group, not just the people already in on it.
Why it matters
Keep Calm only works if new people can see what's happening and join in. A private group that quietly takes over all the organising for an activity, while the public Keep Calm group goes dormant, cuts off that discovery for everyone who joins after. It also makes the wider community look far less active than it actually is, which is the opposite of what we're trying to build.
Going forward
If you're currently running an activity mostly through a private group, we'd genuinely love to have it back in the fold: post the plan in the Keep Calm group, and let the private chat handle the details that don't need to be public. Groups that continue to organise exclusively outside Keep Calm, cutting off visibility for everyone else, may eventually be asked to bring it back into the open, or lose access to the community's groups.
