Join a Football Team in Barcelona as an English Speaker

If kicking a ball around was part of your life back home, going without it in a new city is one of those small losses that adds up. The problem most newcomers run into is that local football in Barcelona can feel hard to access: the clubs run in Catalan or Spanish, the WhatsApp groups are closed circles, and "just turning up" rarely works. So how do you actually get a regular game as an English speaker?

You don't need a club, a team, or fluent Spanish

Here's the reassuring part: you don't need to commit to a league, pass a trial, or know a single person already playing. What you're really after is a social, drop-in game - somewhere you can sign up week to week, get a proper match, and be welcomed whatever your level. That format is far easier to find than a traditional team, and it suits expat life much better.

Friday social football on Montjuïc

This is exactly what Keep Calm Football is. It's mixed, social football for English-speaking expats, internationals and locals in Barcelona - ladies and gents both welcome, and total beginners genuinely included. This is social football, not a league: turning up and having a good time matters far more than the result.

Teams are mixed on the day, so everyone gets a proper game whatever their level - and nobody is left standing on the sideline.

The regular game runs every Friday at 18:00 at Satalia in Sants-Montjuïc - an 8v8 game on one of the prettiest pitches in the city, up on Montjuïc with views over Barcelona as the sun goes down. We've teamed up with Vaya Sports, who supply the bibs and balls, provide an on-site organiser, and collect payment through their app, so it's typically just a few euros per game with no membership fee.

What to bring

  • A black or dark shirt (teams are split with bibs over the top)
  • Footwear suited to the surface, plus shin pads
  • Water - and your best end-of-week energy

The venue is easy to reach: Carrer de Margarit 23, a short walk from Metro L3 Poble Sec / Paral·lel. Arrive about ten minutes before the 18:00 kickoff so you're ready to go.

The game is only half the point

Afterwards we head to a nearby bar for thirty minutes to an hour of drinks and a chat. Come for the football, the social, or both - you're welcome even if you only want to watch. For a lot of our players, that Friday-evening rhythm of a game then a beer is the anchor their whole week is built around, and where the real friendships happen.

How to get your first game

  1. Head to the football activity page and join the Football WhatsApp group via the link there.
  2. Watch for the weekly Vaya sign-up link posted in the group.
  3. Tap the link to open the game in the Vaya app, then sign up and pay your share.
  4. If your plans change after signing up, remove yourself in the app so someone else can take the spot.
  5. Turn up at Satalia ten minutes before kickoff, play, then join us for a drink.

That's genuinely it. No trial, no commitment, no awkward introductions - just a friendly game on a beautiful pitch. Ready to lace up? Find out more and join the football group, or join the wider community to see everything else we run. See you on Montjuïc.
