Beach volleyball at Barceloneta
Barceloneta is the beach closest to the old town and the port.
Worth knowing: our regular games do not use Barceloneta. They rotate between Nova Icaria, Somorrostro and Bogatell. This page is a guide to the beach itself.
The beach
Barceloneta is the beach most visitors picture when they think of Barcelona: the closest to the old town, the busiest, and the one with the most going on behind it. Local guides note volleyball nets here too, and games run through the afternoon, though the sheer number of sunbathers means space is tight.
Keep Calm's regular volleyball sessions do not play on Barceloneta. This page is a guide for anyone choosing where to go. Our group plays at Nova Icaria, Somorrostro and Bogatell.
What it is like
It is lively and busy, especially in July and August. If you want atmosphere and people watching it is hard to beat. If you want a calm, uninterrupted game, the beaches a little further north are better suited.
Evenings and weekdays are usually the easier time to find a patch of sand for a casual game.
Getting there
Barceloneta station on the yellow L4 line is a short walk from the sand, and it is within walking distance of the Gothic Quarter and the Born. Because of its position it is one of the easiest beaches to reach on foot from the old town.
Best for
A first look at the Barcelona beach scene, a games-and-drinks evening, and visitors who want everything within walking distance.
Before you go
- Public beach courts are generally first come, first served. Arrive early on summer weekends.
- The beach season runs roughly May to October. Late afternoon to sunset is the busiest time.
- Bring water, sunscreen and a ball. Nets, rules and what is set up change from season to season, so check when you arrive.
