Best Beginner Sports in Barcelona for English Speakers

You don't need to be sporty to use sport as your way into Barcelona. The best beginner sports are the ones that are easy to pick up, forgiving of mistakes, and social by design - so you end up making friends whether or not you ever get good. Here are the ones we'd point any newcomer towards.

1. Padel - the easiest win

If you try one sport, make it padel. It's played two-against-two on a small enclosed court, the underarm serve is simple, and the walls keep the ball in play, so you'll have proper rallies within your first hour. It's the fastest-growing sport in Spain for a reason. Our padel sessions run for every level, from complete beginners upwards, and finish with a drink.

2. Football - if you want a crowd

Social football is perfect if you'd rather run around with a group than worry about technique. Our Friday social football on Montjuïc is mixed, all levels, ladies and gents - teams are balanced on the day so everyone gets a proper game, and nobody's expecting professionals.

3. Volleyball - beach vibes, low pressure

Beach volleyball is wonderfully beginner-friendly: the pace is gentle, the setting is gorgeous, and the rotation means you're constantly chatting to new people. Our volleyball group welcomes all abilities.

4. Running and hiking - just show up

If picking up a skill feels like too much, group runs and hikes ask nothing more than turning up and putting one foot in front of the other. The relaxed pace makes conversation easy, and Barcelona's beachfront and surrounding hills are made for it.

The best beginner sport is whichever one gets you back next week. Consistency, not talent, is what turns a one-off into a friendship.

How to start without the nerves

  • Tell people you're new - everyone's been the newcomer, and the games get kept friendly.
  • Go with a community that runs sessions in English so language is never a barrier.
  • Pick one activity and repeat it before adding a second.

That's exactly what Keep Calm is for: a free, English-speaking sports and social community for expats, internationals and newcomers in Barcelona, where beginners are genuinely welcome. Ready to give it a go? Join the community and pick your first session.
