Every Keep Calm WhatsApp group is capped at 1,000 members, and the whole community is capped at 2,000. With 20 to 30 new people asking to join Keep Calm every day, there often isn't room for someone new unless a space opens up. So every so often, we automatically remove accounts that aren't active in Keep Calm anymore, to make room for people who actually want to be involved. This explains how that works.
What counts as active
Being active in Keep Calm means actually taking part, whether that's turning up to a session or staying engaged with what's happening in between. It's not about being a chatty member of the group.
In practice, here's what keeps your account active:
- Responding to an event invite - Going, Not going, or Maybe all count, since it's the clearest sign you're engaged with what's on
- Sending a message
- Reacting to a message
- Voting in a poll (or creating one)
This is checked across every Keep Calm group you're in, not just one. Being active anywhere keeps your whole membership safe.
How it works
We run automatic reviews for accounts that haven't been active for a couple of months. If your account is flagged, it's removed from every Keep Calm group you're part of, not just the one you'd gone quiet in.
We don't send a personal warning first
This is deliberate. Sending lots of people automated personal messages is exactly the kind of pattern WhatsApp's own spam detection watches for, and we would rather not put the whole community's groups at risk over it. We do post the occasional reminder in the groups themselves encouraging everyone to stay engaged.
If you're removed
This is a WhatsApp restriction, not a choice we make: once you're removed from a group, you can't rejoin on your own, even with an old invite link. The only way back in is a fresh invite from the community owner, manually. This isn't a ban, it's just tidying up.
If you'd still like to be part of Keep Calm, submit an appeal rather than messaging an organiser directly - it goes straight to Keep Calm Admin, who'll take a look and send you a fresh invite if it's approved.
How to stay active
Come to a session now and then. That's the best way to stay part of Keep Calm, and RSVPing to an event is the clearest sign to us that you're still engaged. If you genuinely can't make it for a while, responding to an invite, reacting to a message, or voting in a poll every couple of months will also keep your account active.
